• Sex Health Education 

    BACKGROUND

    Public Act 102-0522 was signed into law on August 20, 2021, changing the School Code’s provisions regarding sex education curricula

    • Comprehensive personal health and safety (grades K-5), aligned with the National Sex Education Standards (NSES)

    • Comprehensive sexual health education (grades 6-12), aligned with the National Sex Education Standards (NSES)

    Like with previous laws regarding sex education, parents/guardians can opt their children out of sex education instruction by submitting a request in writing to the building principal.

    Section 27-9.1a(h) also provides that schools may adapt the comprehensive personal health and safety and comprehensive sexual health education courses, as follows:

    • (h)Schools may choose and adapt the age and developmentally appropriate, medically accurate, complete, culturally appropriate, inclusive, and trauma-informed comprehensive personal health and safety and comprehensive sexual health education curriculum that meets the specific needs of the community. All instruction and materials, including materials provided by or presented by outside consultants, community groups or organizations, may not conflict with the provisions of the Section.

    SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION IN D60

    D60 will continue to provide the current offering of sex education classes allowable under School Code. Our lessons in sexual health education are provided by partnering with external presenters from Candor Health Education.

    CURRENT OFFERINGS IN D60

    Curriculum Overview: “Puberty 1”

    Grade: 5

    Partnership: Candor Health Education

    Students will:

    • Understand the physical changes that take place during puberty

    • Recognize the function of the male and female reproductive system, including the menstrual cycle

    • Identify the emotional characteristics of puberty, including self-image pressures

    • Be introduced to definitions pertaining to harassment and sexual harassment using age appropriate scenarios

    Curriculum Overview: “Talking Human Reproduction and Embryology”

    Grade: 7

    Partnership: Candor Health Education

    Students will:

    • Explain the functions of the reproductive organs​

    • Describe the process of fertilization​

    • Recognize the stages of growth during prenatal development (embryology)​

    • Identify social-emotional learning (SEL) tools to manage life challenges

    Curriculum Overview: “Teen Sexual Health”

    Grade: 8

    Partnership: Candor Health Education

    Students will:

    • Recognize that the decisions they make can impact their sexual health

    • Identify the powers they possess to make decisions about their sexual health

    • Understand sexual intercourse and its relationship to human reproduction

    • Understand STIs, how they are transmitted and ways to minimize risk of transmission

    Communications that include presentations and informational videos regarding the 5th, 7th and 8th grade lessons are sent home to parents or guardians. These also include an overview of the content in advance. Parents/guardians can opt out of any of these lessons by contacting their child’s school using a form that is provided in the family communication.
