• Why does attendance matter? There are multiple reasons, but the research indicates a few significant ones stating that chronically absent students are less likely to read at grade level by 3rd grade, more likely to underperform on standardized tests and get suspended in middle school, and are four times more likely to not complete high school. The good news is that we can do something about this. Research and experience have shown that there are some effective strategies in helping students attend more regularly and change that trajectory. Here are six key strategies from the article, “Attendance Is An Essential Ingredient for Educational Equity.” Take a few minutes to read more within the article. You will notice some of your building's next steps plans align with these strategies.

    1. Avoid blame and communicate why regular attendance matters.
    2. Forge deep partnerships with students and families.
    3. Use data to prioritize supports.
    4. Support engagement and learning in multiple settings.
    5. Adopt a multidisciplinary team approach.
    6. Make attendance a year-round priority.
