Friday April 18 is a non attendance day!

Let’s hear from Safiya, with the right photo this time!
What is your best memory of your time in Maercker District 60?
The last day of school in seventh grade.
Who is a teacher who made an impact on you during your time here?
Mrs. Pervan
What are you interested in doing for your future?
I’m not sure yet.
What advice do you have for students starting at Westview Hills Middle School next year?
Care about what you are learning and try hard!

It’s time for ask an 8th grader!
Tamara A. will be heading to Downers Grove North next year and has a lot of great things to say about her time in D60.
What is your best memory of your time in Maercker District 60?
My favorite memory at Westview is all of eighth grade if I’m being honest. Each and every one of us know it’s our last year all together, so it kind of seemed like we all got closer together. We built better friendships and bonds and stayed out of drama and it felt super fast as we had fun through the whole year.
Who is a teacher who made an impact on you during your time here?
Ms Pervan has made an impact on me by proving to me and others my true potential in ELA and she shares a special bond with me and twizzlers. She respects my classes needs and always shows empathy.
What are you interested in doing for your future?
I’m pretty skilled at art so I will continue to do that in the future, and throughout high school. Hopefully, I will go into the medical field and explore becoming a pediatrician (doctor for kids) or cardiologist (doctor for the heart).
What advice do you have for students starting at Westview Hills Middle School next year?
Do not procrastinate, stay out of drama and and enjoy every minute of it because those three years went by super quickly.

In March students at Holmes celebrated Disability Awareness Month with help from Maercker PTA Volunteers and author of Hi, Max, Malena Lindberg, and her brother Max! Malena’s book helps kids understand why inclusion and empathy are important and students really enjoyed the time. #d60learns

First graders learned about technology and robots, and how they can help make our lives easier. Students brainstormed some creative ways they could invent their own robots to help solve a problem and worked hard to type out sentences, used very detailed and descriptive language on Padlet to digitally create a robot image exactly to their liking, and published a class book about their robot inventions. #d60learns

To all in the Maercker D60 community who celebrate, Happy Passover!

Holmes second graders read about Sue the dinosaur from the Field Museum and wanted to learn more about dinosaurs vs. other animals. They also took some time to analyze how Who Would Win books are written, and how images help convey the information. Then they paired up and picked some crazy animal matchups including dinosaurs to go in for a battle together. They really dug into research and will share their findings on their first google slide show presentations. #d60learns

Students really enjoyed watching some teachers become a “Masked Reader” to celebrate Read Across America week at Holmes! They said it was fun to guess which teacher was reading a story to them each morning. Students in first grade were very excited when they got a turn to make their own “Masked Readers” videos. They practiced reading aloud to peers, and shared their silly stories with their families on Seesaw. #d60learns

“When students have frequent absences, they often might miss special education services, English language services, and social growth opportunities. More importantly, they miss their friends and their friends miss them,” said preschool teacher Elizabeth Jason. “Selfishly, in the early childhood program, we want all of our students with us every day because we objectively get to have the most fun and every child in our classroom community is a part of that!”

This week is National Assistant Principals Week! Maercker D60 has some truly exceptional educators serving our schools in this role and we are excited to be able to celebrate them. Be sure to thank Megan Hansen, Dennis Bolus, and Steve Meehan this week!

We hope everyone has had a great break! We are excited to see students on Monday, April 7 refreshed and ready to learn!

The next D60 Parent Coffee will take place on Wednesday, April 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Maercker School. We will be talking about technology use and hope you will join us!
