The Maercker School Ecology Club was fortunate to work together with the village of Westmont to plant two new trees! Prior to planting, the students learned about the benefits of trees and responsibilities of the job of arborists. The village provided the two new trees and assisted the students with planting them near our native gardens on the south side of the building. The Ecology Club has been instrumental in planting the majority of the trees on Maercker's property over the years and is run by Mrs. Gorey and Ms. Simms. #d60learns
May is Jewish American Heritage Month! This month is a time to honor the history and contributions of Jewish Americans and celebrate their diverse backgrounds and rich cultures.

The Holmes Art Fair featured work from all 421 students in kindergarten, first, and second grade! Students chose to either display artwork made in Fine Arts with Ms. Beglen or made at home. Thank you for the many parent volunteers who made our exhibit beautiful! #d60learns

Maercker School had a fantastic Band and Chorus Concert last week with a standing room only crowd! Students did an assembly for their peers during the day and a performances for parents in the evening. #d60learns
Band students at Westview Hills were recently visited by a quintet, mostly made up of Westview alums for a performance. The seniors are going to some impressive universities next year and were able to share their talents and advice with current middle school students. Thanks and congratulations to Austin Eldridge (horn, going to U of I), Amy Chen (flute, going to Northwestern), Vandana Sivakumar (bassoon, going to Northeastern), and Sonali Marion (oboe, going to Vanderbilt) for visiting and sharing your talents!
First grade students had a lot of fun making their illustrations “talk” while presenting their narrative writing for their ELA unit. They wrote a narrative about when they made a mistake, and what they learned from it and used iPads to illustrate the story. Then they used ChatterKid to make their stories come to life to share with friends and family on Seesaw. #d60learns

April is National Arab American Heritage Month! During the month of April, the Arab America Foundation formally recognizes the achievements of Arab Americans.
For this year’s One School, One Book, Maercker School is reading Restart, by Gordon Korman. Thanks to the generous gift of the Maercker PTA, each student and staff received a copy of the book and will discuss it together as they read through the chapters. The author will be visiting with students virtually on May 13! #d60learns
